The Emerging Leaders Fund aims to expand the budget for professional and identity development experiences to LGBTQ+ college students. In collaboration with the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the fund helps sustain programs that develop the young professionals of the community.
This year’s efforts are focused on providing financial assistance to LGBTQ+ students hoping to attend MBLGTACC, the largest and oldest, continuously-held LGBTQ+ college conference in the nation.
For many LGBTQ+ students, the conference is the first time they’re able to experience a sense of community, beyond the limited diversity in Eau Claire/Chippewa Valley. They attend any number of important workshops and presentations that speak to the lived experiences of the LGBTQ+ community. Stellar keynotes expose attendees to community leaders (including Laverne Cox, Patrice Cullors, Janet Mock, and Cece MacDonald) providing aspirational examples of leadership and activism. In many cases, students submit proposals and are selected to present at MBLGTACC, an important component of professional development. Ultimately, students leave energized and are ready to tackle the issues of today.
